What are Greenhouse Gas Emissions?
Greenhouse gases (GHGs) allow the sun's rays to pass through the atmosphere but trap in heat that sustains life on our planet. This process is known as the “greenhouse effect.” Without these gases - primarily water vapour, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide — the earth would be too cold for most creatures to survive. Greenhouse gases (GHGs) exist within the atmosphere both naturally and as a result of anthropogenic (human) processes. The primary, man-made GHGs include:
- Carbon dioxide
- Methane
- Nitrous oxide
- Sulphur hexafluoride
- Hydrofluorocarbons
- Perfluorocarbons
What is Carbon Offsetting?
In recent years, many governments and intergovernmental organizations such as the UN have highlighted the need for ethical and sustainable businesses. BNW Travel Management offers you the ability to offset all your travel emissions by creating an automatic or manual payment plan to keep your business carbon-neutral.
What is a Carbon Footprint?
A carbon footprint is the measurement of the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) emitted to sustain a person's lifestyle and activities, both directly and indirectly. Carbon footprints are often quantified in equivalent tonnes of CO2 over the course of a year and can be linked to a person, a business, a product, or an event, among many other things. The production and use of fossil fuels, manufactured items, food, materials, roads, as well as transportation can all contribute to a carbon footprint.
What are the benefits of Green House Gas (GHG) offsetting?
There are many advantages for companies who seek to manage their Greenhouse gas emissions. Some of the benefits include:
- Identify opportunities to save money by reducing overall GHG emissions
- Allow you to take responsibility for emissions that cannot be decreased
- Build leadership in the marketplace
- Increased corporate social responsibility
How are carbon emissions calculated?
A carbon footprint is calculated by the number of tonnes of greenhouse gasses emitted each year. For instance, walking to a location has lower GHG emissions than driving to that location. Similarly, the smaller a hotel room, the less carbon is used to maintain the room's utilities. Even though travel isn't a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, consumers and employees are demanding companies take the initiative. To be more specific:
- Flights: Flight carbon emissions are calculated based on the distance, aircraft type and fuel efficiency, the number of seats and the chosen flight class. We frequently update our data on new aircraft to keep our estimations as accurate as possible.
- Car Rentals: Car rental emissions are calculated based on the fuel type of the rented car, the type of the car and the average driven distance of rented cars, in that year. These variables are monitored and updated frequently.
- Hotel Stays: Calculation of emissions for stays is done according to Cornell Hotel Sustainability Benchmark. The calculation factors in the geographical location, the energy source, the amenities of the hotel and the area of the room (if the data is provided by our partners).
How do my carbon offsets achieve reductions?
Carbon offsets are essentially a commodity generated by an emissions reduction project. The reduction would not have otherwise taken place without carbon financing. With your purchase of carbon offsets, the dollars associated with the transaction ensure the project generates emissions reductions and continues to be viable over the project's lifecycle. Furthermore, when you offset carbon, there are often a series of social co-benefits within the region. These benefits may include education opportunities, air-quality improvements, or job creation. The support and renewal of the carbon offset projects not only ensure emissions reductions from the projects but also increases the socio-benefits of the surrounding regions.
Can I claim my offsets as a tax expense?
It depends. If you are an individual, then the emissions that you offset cannot be claimed as a tax expense. However, if you are offsetting any component of your business, then you can claim the carbon offsets as a business expense. Please feel free to contact us for more details.
Why offset my emissions?
Every action we take affects the environment. Our daily choices impact our carbon footprint. Everything we do from how we go to work to what we eat, impacts the climate. So, what are our options? What's wonderful is you have the power to alter your footprint. With BNW Travel Management's carbon offsetting tool, we automatically track all your travel emissions and allow you to easily offset them.
What is the largest-sized booking I can make on the website?
You can make a group booking of up to 9 people without having to make a request to speak with a travel agent.
Not everyone is travelling on the same dates, can we still book as a group?
To book online, we require all travellers in a group to depart and return from the same city on the same dates. We recommend those who are deviating from the group to self-book their travels to accommodate their custom dates. If the remainder of the group is still 7 or more seats, your travel agent can book them as a group.
How do I make a booking for groups larger than 9 people?
If you are not a travel agent, ask your travel agent to create the group booking request. If you are a travel agent, on the dashboard you can click on “bookings” and the sub-category “send me a quote.”
When requesting group bookings from a travel agent, can I request more than one service?
Yes, when requesting group bookings from a travel agent, you can typically request more than one service. For example, you may request group transportation, group accommodation, group activities or tours, and any other travel-related services that you require for your group. When contacting a travel agent to make group bookings, it is a good idea to have a clear idea of your group's needs and preferences so that the agent can help you to plan an itinerary that meets your requirements.”
How do I pay? Can each traveller pay separately?
There are several options for paying for group bookings. Some options may include:
- One payment: The total cost of the group booking can be paid in one lump sum by a single person, such as the group leader or organizer. This person can then collect individual payments from each member of the group to cover their share of the cost.
- Individual payments: Each member of the group can pay for their own portion of the booking directly to the travel agent.
- Third-party payment: A third party, such as a company or organization, can pay for the group booking on behalf of all group members.
Do promo codes work on the website?
Yes, you can enter them in the Promo Code box on the home screen. Fares on the results page will reflect the Promo Code discount which may not be as favourable as your negotiated corporate discount. You can find promotions, handpicked by our travel experts on the homepage or on the deals page.
